Situation : Completion of one of the most complex installation project to date concerning the fire protection of a cable shovel. The Caterpillar-Bucyrus shovel from Cliffs Mining in Fermont, worth more than 15 million dollars, is part of the biggest excavators on the market.
Solution : Three fire systems, one using dry chemical, and two using gas, including seven cylinders and more than 40 jets were installed. The project required two full weeks for the installation with four technicians. This solution provided the customer with the best possible protection, both for the equipment and workers, who work at more than 30 feet high with the ultimate goal of ensuring consistent production.

Situation : The SNO + experiment is one of SNOLAB’s experiments that was being upgraded. The SNO+ experiment is housed in a rock cavity measuring approximately 30 meters deep, and inside is suspended a spherical acrylic vessel (AV) of 12 meters in diameter surrounded by ~10,000 photomultiplier tubes. There is a deck above the cavity on which is suspended the AV. There is a single point of access from the deck into the cavity area, and also a single point of access from the deck into the interior of the AV. Upgrades to the SNO+ experiment required access to both the cavity and the interior of the AV, which are difficult access confined spaces.
Solution : SNOLAB – we contracted ISM for a period of nearly 2 years to provide Confined Space Consulting, Rescue and Attendant services for entry in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) Cavity and Acrylic Vessel.
