The XTIRPA confined space systems; among the most versatile on the market

The XTIRPA confined space systems; among the most versatile on the market

The MSA XTIRPA™ product range provides an array of possibilities for confined spaces. Whether for fall arrest, positioning or rescue, you will find just the right and efficient solution adapted to your needs.

First, the definition of a confined space varies according to the government level (federal/provincial), the province, the standard CSA Z1006 and even organizational standards (always refer to the current regulations and standards for more details). In summary, remember that a confined space is a completely or partially closed space that:

  1. Is not designed for permanent human occupancy;
  2. Has limited and restricted means of access or egress;
  3. May present risks for any person entering, depending on various factors.

Regardless of the definition, when working in these hostile environments, the risk of injury or death is extremely high.

There are two main types of confined spaces; vertical entry and horizontal entry. For a vertical entry (top entry), the choice of fall arrest and rescue system in a confined space will vary depending on different elements.

First of all, the standard CSA Z1006-16 Working in Confined Spaces, article 8.1.10.2 Fall Protection Devices, states that:

“For work being carried out at heights, or for a top-entry confined space, the organization shall require the use of fall protection devices. The anchor point shall be capable of withstanding the forces applied to it, and all fall protection equipment shall be in accordance with the CSA Z259 series Standard applicable to that equipment and meet all applicable requirements as specified by the authority having jurisdiction.”

Various MSA XTIRPA™ solutions adapted to vertical entry fit very well with this standard. On the other hand, for confined spaces with horizontal entry, there are also adaptive solutions to maximize the success of the rescue.

CONFINED SPACE: HOW TO CHOOSE AN MSA XTIRPA™ SYSTEM

Do you need a system for vertical or horizontal entry?

If you choose a vertical entry system, do you need a self-standing system or one fixed with a permanent or a punctual anchor? What are the required range and height? Determine the range from the center of the entry point while taking into account the upper clearance limits. One thing to remember: our experts at SPI Health and Safety determined that there must be a minimum of 100 cm (40 in.) between the equipment hook of the hoisting equipment and the confined space entry point.

Do you need the MSA XTIRPA™ to serve as a fall arrest, rescue or entry (positioning) device and retrieval device?

Fall arrest and rescue device only: a self-retracting lifeline with 3-way retrieval winch is recommended (fixed to the entrant’s harness) when a ladder or another structure is present to climb up and down of the confined space.

Fall arrest, rescue, entry (positioning) and retrieval system: when this type of system is in place, a positioning winch must be used as the main system to go up or down (in replacement of a ladder) combined with access equipment (harness, double-leg lanyard attached to the shoulders, etc.) and a self-retracting lifeline with a 3-way retrieval winch (fixed to the entrant’s harness).

What type of permanent or punctual anchor point is required? The choice of the anchor point and the equipment used in order to install your MSA XTIRPA™ system shall comply with the CSA Z259 series standard.

Consider the environment. Is the space limited? Are there overhanging beams? Is it for frequent use or not?

Consider the materials where your anchor points are fixed.

Do you need to protect your entry point of the confined space against any accidental entry? When the covers are removed, the entry must be quickly protected by a guardrail, a temporary cover or another temporary barrier that will prevent an accidental fall into the confined space.

MSA XTIRPA™ SYSTEMS FOR CONFINED SPACES

The MSA XTIRPA™ system offers different possibilities. Whether for a fall arrest, positioning or rescue system, it has been designed to maximize the safety of the different confined space stakeholders. With innovative designs and the use of state-of-the-art materials, the MSA XTIRPA™ is ergonomic, easy to use and the lightest on the market. The MSA XTIRPA™ system meets and exceeds the standards ANSI, OSHA, CE and CSA, or other provincial requirements.

WHY CHOOSE THE MSA XTIRPA™ SYSTEMS

All MSA XTIRPA™ systems:

  • can be used with a self-retracting lifeline that has a 3-way retrieval winch and positioning winches you already have as a variety of mounting brackets is available
  • ensure the descent, retrieval and fall protection in every position
  • provide portable and lightweight components per category, and most of them are interchangeable
  • offer a fall arrest solution providing a 5,000-pound anchor point for fall and rescue protection
  • are versatile, cost-efficient and especially easy to maneuver
  • are simple and quick to install and dismantle

MSA XTIRPA™ FIXED OR REMOVABLE DAVIT ARM ADAPTER BASE SYSTEM

For confined space requiring a regular installation or dismantlement, this system is the ideal solution. It consists of a davit arm and mast simply fixed to an adapter base. Fixed or removable bases are offered in different options. The choice is made according to the area’s configuration and the needs. This system is lightweight, reliable and easy to install. It facilitates access to vertical confined spaces.

MSA XTIRPA™ MANHOLE GUARD SYSTEM

The strength of this system is that it offers entry point protection without additional equipment. The portable guardrail with a davit arm is the ideal system for different manholes and underground chambers or any other type of confined space where the entry point must be protected.

MSA XTIRPA™ PORTABLE “H” BASE HOIST SYSTEM

This autonomous system is ideal when you need to move and access different confined space entry points. The portable base offers stability and adapts well to most standard confined spaces. Combined with a davit arm and a mast, it offers a solution for the entry, rescue and positioning of an entrant. The system pivots for an easier and safer rescue.

MSA XTIRPA™ POLE HOIST SYSTEM

This adjustable and versatile system with a swivel head can be used for vertical and horizontal entry of confined spaces. Attached to a certified vertical anchorage point, it offers fall protection and a recovery option in case of rescue. Also, when combined with a specific adaptor, it can also be used for horizontal entry retrieval. This system is worth it.
